Which coil to choose for your e-cigarette? The practical guide

In short: to choose an e-cigarette coil, do not rely only on its value in ohms: first check that it is compatible with your equipment, then respect the power range given by the manufacturer.

The coil is one of the most important parts of an e-cigarette: it affects how the e-liquid is vaporized and the sensations you get. Faced with the values shown (0.6 ohm, 0.8 ohm, 1 ohm, 1.2 ohm…), one question comes up often: which coil should you choose for your e-cigarette? Here are the main points to understand.

What is an e-cigarette coil?

The coil is the component that heats to vaporize the e-liquid. It is generally made of a wire or resistive element combined with an absorbent material that feeds the heating zone with liquid. It is a consumable part: it wears out gradually and must be replaced at the end of its life. See when to change the coil and how to change it (in French).

What does the value in ohms mean?

A coil's value is expressed in ohms (Ω): it describes the electrical resistance of the heating element. You may find 0.4 Ω, 0.6 Ω, 0.8 Ω, 1.0 Ω, 1.2 Ω or 1.5 Ω. These values are not chosen at random: they are tied to specific power ranges and ways of working. Always check the manufacturer's instructions.

Low or high resistance: what is the difference?

In general, lower-value coils are often associated with higher power, and higher-value coils with lower power. But you cannot deduce a precise power from the value in ohms alone: design varies by manufacturer and range. The power range printed on the coil remains the reference.

Which coil for mouth-to-lung (MTL) or more airy vaping?

MTL means keeping the vapor in your mouth before inhaling. It is generally associated with coils working at moderate power, sometimes above 1 ohm. But a value above 1 ohm does not automatically mean MTL: always consider the equipment's design and the manufacturer's recommendations. More airy inhalation (DTL) uses coils designed for higher power and often a lower value. Again, there is no rule to choose from ohms alone: compatibility with the tank, the power range and the manufacturer's recommendations remain essential.

Which coil when starting out?

What matters is not picking the lowest or highest value, but identifying your equipment: brand, model, tank or pod reference, compatible coils and recommended power range. You can then compare compatible coils. If you do not know the settings yet, a coil in a moderate power range may be simpler to handle on some devices. See Getting started.

Which coil for a pod?

Pods generally use coils specific to their range: replaceable coil, cartridge with built-in coil, or several compatible values. Compatibility with the pod is the first criterion. A coil designed for another model may work badly even if its value seems similar. See also which e-liquid for a pod?

How to choose between 0.6 Ω, 0.8 Ω and 1 Ω?

  • 0.6 Ω: may be designed for higher power than a higher-value coil, depending on the model.
  • 0.8 Ω: an intermediate zone in many ranges.
  • 1 Ω: often associated with more moderate power, notably on some compact devices and for more mouth-to-lung inhalation.

These examples do not replace the manufacturer's indications: two coils of the same value from different ranges may have different characteristics.

Which power should you use with a coil?

Power must suit the coil. Most coils show a recommended power range on their body or packaging, for example 0.8 Ω — 12 to 18 W. These figures are only an example: for your equipment, always use the range actually given by the manufacturer. Stay within the recommended range: too much power can cause excess heat and wear the coil faster; too little changes vapor production and flavor.

Does the coil affect e-liquid consumption and flavor?

Yes: coil type and settings can influence consumption, and two different coils on the same device can give different sensations depending on their value, design, power, airflow, liquid and how you vape. Consumption also depends on how often you vape and the equipment: the coil's value is not a sufficient indicator.

How to know if a coil is compatible?

Check the exact reference: the manufacturer's name is not always enough, as one brand may offer several incompatible coil families. Follow this order: brand → model → coil family → value → power range. What happens if you fit the wrong coil? It may not be recognized, be impossible to install properly or lead to inappropriate operation. Never force a coil into a housing that does not fit it.

Burnt taste with a new coil, or a coil that wears out quickly

A new coil can taste burnt if it is not soaked enough, if used too soon after installation, if power is too high, if the liquid level is insufficient or if it is badly installed. If the taste persists, stop using it and check the assembly and settings. See burnt taste: causes and solutions (in French). Wear depends on how often you vape, power, liquid type, puff rhythm, priming and equipment; a very aromatic or sweet liquid can also clog faster.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing only by ohms: the value alone is not enough.
  • Forgetting compatibility.
  • Exceeding the recommended power.
  • Not priming a new coil.
  • Mixing up two similar references.
  • Always chasing maximum power: more power does not mean a better vaping experience.

FAQ

Which coil should I choose to start?

There is no universal starter coil. Choose a coil compatible with your equipment and respect the power range given by the manufacturer.

What does 0.8 ohm mean on a coil?

0.8 ohm is the electrical resistance value of the heating element, tied to operating characteristics that depend on the model.

Which coil for a pod?

Use a coil or cartridge specifically compatible with the pod model: the value in ohms alone is not enough.

Does a lower-value coil make more vapor?

It may be designed for higher power and produce more vapor depending on the equipment, but that is not an absolute rule.

When should you change a coil?

A drop in flavor, a persistent burnt taste or a change in how it works may indicate a coil at the end of its life.
