MTL or DTL: indirect or direct inhalation, what is the difference?
Share
In short: indirect inhalation (MTL) means holding the vapor in your mouth before inhaling it; direct inhalation (DTL) draws it straight to the lungs. The choice affects the equipment, the coil, the e-liquid and the sensation.
"MTL" and "DTL" come up constantly when choosing equipment. Here is what they mean and how to find your way.
MTL: indirect inhalation
MTL stands for "Mouth To Lung". You draw the vapor into your mouth, hold it a moment, then inhale it. The draw is tighter, the vapor less abundant. It is the mode associated with small pods and higher-value coils.
DTL: direct inhalation
DTL stands for "Direct To Lung". The vapor is drawn straight to the lungs, with a more airy draw and more vapor. It needs more powerful equipment, with lower-value coils.
Comparison
| Criterion | MTL | DTL |
|---|---|---|
| Draw | Tight | Airy |
| Vapor | Moderate | More abundant |
| Equipment | Pods, small kits | More powerful equipment |
| Coil | Higher value | Lower value |
| E-liquid | Often richer in PG | Often richer in VG |
These are tendencies: each model has its own characteristics, and the manufacturer remains the reference.
How to choose
- You want a compact, simple device: MTL is often the most suitable.
- You look for more vapor and an airy draw: DTL, with equipment designed for it.
- In all cases, match coil, power and liquid. See which coil to choose?, the PG/VG guide and pod or e-cigarette?
